Beekeeping Courses and other Resources for
Managing Honey Bees in Idaho

Intermediate Beekeeping Workshops

Too many beekeepers in Eastern Idaho lose their hives over the winter. Much of this winter loss can be attributed to poor hive health. To help mitigate against this, two Intermediate Beekeeping Workshops will be held in Rexburg, Idaho, on June 18 and June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. These workshops are designed for current beekeepers who already have some experience keeping bees and would like to learn more.

Participants may choose to attend either day.

These workshops taught by Master Beekeeper Ward Hicks will teach participants how to properly manage hives for optimum health and productivity.

Each workshop will consist of two parts. The first part will be classroom instruction from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Madison County Administration Building located at 134 E Main St, in Rexburg, Idaho.

After the classroom instruction participants will be offered a hands-on practice at an apiary located about 3 miles west of Rexburg. Students will travel to the apiary and then practice what they’ve learned by inspecting and working with actual hives.

Participants should bring their own protective gear, a hive tool and a smoker.

Each workshop will conclude at the apiary at 1 p.m.

This workshop will focus on the following topics:
  • Hive inspections. How to properly manipulate the hive with the least amount of disturbance. Utilizing the smoker appropriately and the use of bare-handed techniques.
  • Identifying queens, drones, workers and brood in various stages along with their health conditions.
  • Record keeping. How to keep track of when and what is done each time you inspect.
  • Analyzing diseases and pests. This will include techniques for identifying American foulbrood, European foulbrood, Chalkbrood, Sacbrood, Nosema, Parasitic Mite Syndrome and the debilitating viruses associated with Varroa Destructor
  • Methods for treating and managing disease.
  • Evaluating for Varroa mite presence in the hive
  • Proper treatment for Varroa mites
  • Making splits and creating nucs
  • Requeening the hive and techniques for marking your queens
  • Swarm mitigation, supering techniques and honey harvesting tips

Cost for the course is $75 per person. A discount ticket for two ($125) is available for those who want to bring a partner and share materials.

All participants will receive a packet of class materials and a mite testing device.

Seating is limited, so be sure to register early!
